Charlotte leaders, CMPD discuss efforts to combat affordable housing crisis

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) – Charlotte leaders and the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department meet Friday to discuss efforts to combat the affordable housing crisis in the Queen City.

Mayor Vi Lyles explained the city’s goals, how the police department and city council are working with local organizations and possible solutions to Charlotte’s affordable housing problem.

“We’re reaching out to the community to help us stop evictions,” said Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles. “Make sure that people know that they can volunteer to make sure a family has furniture when we provide a place to live.”

Charlotte’s Housing and Neighborhood Services organization is currently working toward city council’s goal to create 5,000 affordable housing units in the next three years.
